Tournament Structure

The Official FLL 2010 Challenge, Body Forward, will be used to be consistent with the FLL program and the CT FLL State Tournament.  Scoring for the Robot Challenge will be based on the HIGHEST achieved score for a single challenge attempt.

  • Tournament Sites may host up to 32 FLL teams Maximum.  Shelton will host 28 this year.
  • Playing Field - Minimum requirement of a single FIRST Regulation Competition Table - 8 ft. X 8 ft. Table with TWO playing fields elevated to meet ADA requirements.
  • Minimum Number of Robot Rounds - Four (4).  The Shelton Qualifying Event will have two main FLL tournament tables for the competition and two tournament tables reserved as a practice fields.  Each tournament table consists of two fields back to back.  There will be a six tournament rounds of play for each competing team.
  • FLL Qualifying Event Participation Medals shall be awarded to each student that participates.
  • CT State Sanctioned FLL Qualifying Event Registration Fee is $45

  • At a minimum, the following Five (5) FLL Awards must be judged, using FLL Judging Criteria.
    • Champion’s Award - Similar to the Chairman’s Award in the High School FIRST program. It encompasses the key elements of the Project, Technical, and Team Performance Awards.
    • Teamwork Award – This award focuses on Team Integration, Team Formation and Interaction, Focused Efforts, Consideration, and Coach/Mentor Influence
    • Research Presentation Award – Judges of this award look for Research Quality, an Innovative Solution to the problem presented, and Presentation quality
    • Judged Technical Awards (Robot) – Judges score on Innovative Design, Robust Design, and Programming quality
    • Robot Performance - Based on score earned on playing field. Highest Score used, all lower scores thrown out.
  • The top CT team NOT already qualified for the State Tournament in each of the above five (5) judged award categories will advance to the CT State Tournament if they desire.  If a team turns down the opportunity to advance, then the next top team NOT already qualified will advance.  Additionally, teams will either be drawn randomly to qualify for the CT-FLL State Tournament or advance based on merit as determined by the organizers of each Qualifying event.  If a Qualifying Event can NOT advance five (5) teams to the State Tournament, then the space at the State Tournament will be filled by a team randomly selected from the pool of teams that registered for the State Tournament through FLL.
  • All teams attending the State Tournament will be issued a Golden ticket to symbolize their entry as a competing team in the State Competition.

  • In the event of a tie for the highest score a single elimination round will be played until a clear winner is determined.

The Shelton Qualifying Event will have two FLL tournament tables, with two full field kits on each, and two FLL tournament tables with a two full field kits each reserved as a practice fields.  The Tournament Tables will be designated Blue and Red.  The practice fields will be used by Teams on Deck.  Teams will report to their practice fields prior to their matches.

At any given time during the day there will be teams competing on the Blue field, teams waiting to compete on the Red field, teams waiting to occupy the Blue or Red fields from the practice fields.  When the Blue field round is complete the Red field will start its round.  The Blue on Deck teams will move from the practice fields to the Blue field making room for the next waiting team.
