FLL Shelton Qualifying Event History
2010-2011
Through
the 2010 Body Forward™ Challenge, FLL teams will explore the cutting-edge world
of Biomedical Engineering to discover innovative ways to repair injuries,
overcome genetic predispositions, and maximize the body's potential, with the
intended purpose of leading happier and healthier lives.
Event Begins

2009-2010
“Smart Move” is a two-part Challenge. In the Project phase of the Challenge,
teams identify a problem with the way people, animals, information, or things
travel in their community, create an innovative solution, and share it outside
the team. In the robot game part of
the Challenge, teams confront some of today’s transportation safety and
efficiency problems and apply robotics, sensor technology, and fresh thinking to
solve them. Missions in the
Challenge include efficiency planning, object avoidance, climbing steep bridges
with no guard rails, passenger transport, and crash tests.
“Smart Move”
gives kids a hands-on, real-world experience allowing them to use their
imaginations and creativity in combination with science and technology, and lets
them experience first-hand the very real and exhilarating struggle that even the
leaders and inventors in the world face,” said Dean Kamen, FIRST
founder.

2007-2008
In this year's challenge, FIRST LEGO League analyses energy choices, their
impact, and consequences.
This year’s Power Puzzle challenge is about understanding the elements of
energy use in a world that uses more and more energy every day. As our world
grows and changes so do our energy needs. The Power Puzzle missions get FLL
teams to consider some of the energy choices we have available and how those
choices affect the world.
As we work to make the puzzle pieces fit, we must consider all parts of
energy use, including how energy is made, how it is stored, how we use it, how
much we consume, and how we dispose of associated waste.
Whether it is environmental, financial, social, or cultural, each energy
choice can have positive impacts in some areas while having negative
consequences in others. The challenge is to find practical solutions in your
community without ignoring the larger impacts your action or inaction can have
on your life or around the world.

2006-2007
In this year's challenge, FIRST LEGO League travels to the microscopic world
of Nanotechnology, a world that is 100,000 times smaller than the thickness of a
single strand of hair.
There is a new frontier that will impact every facet of society, from
medicine to computers to the environment. As visionaries and scientists, the
2006 FIRST LEGO League teams will explore unimaginably amazing new technologies
that start in the Nano world and lead to the things we do and use every day.
Nanotechnologists move atoms and molecules around to make amazing new
discoveries. Scientists believe that someday nanotechnology will allow us to
cure diseases using devices small enough to travel through the human body.
Others believe nanotechnology will allow us to travel into space in an elevator
using a system of tiny tubes and centrifugal force. Because of nanotechnology,
right now you can buy things like stain-resistant clothes and bouncier tennis
balls.
Each FLL team will Design, build and program a robot to accomplish the
Challenge Missions on the Field. Teams will explore a current or potential
application of nanotechnology and learn what the experts and other groups are
doing in this area.

2005-2006
In this year's challenge, FIRST LEGO League travels into the depths of the
ocean to explore the mysteries that lie below. The oceans are of vital
importance to the health of the Earth and to everyone that lives on this planet;
yet only 1% of these magnificent bodies of water have been studied.
Oceans provide inspiration, fun, and food. They absorb carbon and
generate oxygen, profoundly affecting the global environmental system. A
distress call has been issued to FIRST LEGO League teams around the world to
find solutions that will sustain the health, biodiversity, and productivity of
the world’s oceans for present and future generations.
Each FLL team will Design, build and program a robot to accomplish the
Challenge Missions on the Field. Teams will choose an ocean activity or
resource and trace its impact on our oceans’ health, biodiversity, and
productivity. Learn what the experts and other groups are doing in this
area, and identify a challenge they are facing.

2004-2005
In this year's challenge, FLL teams will find ways to help people with
different levels of physical ability.
The dream of a modern society is one of equal access for all. Society
as a whole benefits when creativity, technology and open minds come together to
help make that equality possible for all people, regardless of physical
differences. Many people have difficulty moving or walking, or trouble
reading a distant sign or climbing stairs. The 2004 FLL Challenge is to examine
these seemingly simple tasks in a new light and explore how technology and human
thought can work together to create equal access for all people.
Each FLL team will build and program a robot that addresses the specific
needs of people who face physical challenges in today's society. Teams will
research and present robotics technology solutions to help individuals in their
community perform the everyday actions that many people today take for granted.
